Thailand 2024 - Bangkok Part 1

Bangkok is a large city and there is just so much to do, we had to really squeeze it into the 3 nights we were there.

We landed late afternoon, found the transfer company, and headed to our hotel, Maitria Mode Sukhumvit 15. The rooms in the hotel were modern, and it had a very funky roof top bar, perfect for chilling out on and recovering from the jet lag.

We spent out first night exploring the bars within walking distance of our hotel. This included:

  • Sukhumvit 11 - a street lined with bars and clubs which has a chilled out vibe during the day, but quickly becomes a party in the evening.
  • Brewski - a craft beer roof top bar on top of the Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel. There was a DJ here but it had a chilled vibe with great views of the local area and some local craft beers!
  • Soi Cowboy - the notorious party road.. We stubbled onto this road on our way back to the hotel. We were drawn in by the neon lights and thought we should check it out. As you walk down the road, it is an eye opener, with women (often dressed in very little) trying to allure single men into their bars for drink and no doubt other activities. Men with women, such as Lee, were ignored. It is seedy, but its not uncomfortable. It's one of those sights you just have to see (although I did feel a little awkward taking a video of the street!). At one end there are a couple of music bars, with more discreet 'women of the night'. We visited these and had a good time listening to the band, and some of their unusual pronunciation of popular songs.
  • Orange Bar - this is a great people watching bar in the side street and quickly became our favourite bar in Bangkok due to the vibe and the amazing staff. More on than in the next blog!
We of course finished the night off with a 7-Eleven toasty. If you've never heard about these infamous toasties, you need to get yourself to Thailand to try them out. They taste amazing and really are the best pre-hangover food (even better than a kebab!).

  1. Wow, I've not seen the runway cam on a plane before - that's pretty cool!

Jeez Bangkok at night seems so noisy and busy, the mopeds - wow, that'd be a moped convention back here!

Toasties look great, I'd be on that for brekkie, lunch and dinner.

Wow Soi Cowboy takes it up another level, you'd not want to go down there if you didn't feel that great / had a headache.
