Hawaii 50 - Las Vegas Part 1

Lee turned the big 5  0 on the 26th December and to celebrate, we decided to tackle state number 49. 

We started our trip by flying from London Heathrow to Las Vegas with British Airways on the A350-1000. We'd upgraded our seats to Business before the flight with Avios. This also gave us lounge access in Terminal 5 where the free alcohol and nibbles minimised our frustration at the delay to our flight. 

The business class seats on the A350-1000 are amazing. It felt like we were in a first class with our own private pod, huge TV, and flat bed. The food was also surprisingly good and after the meal and a couple more drinks, we both had a sleep. 

We landed in Las Vegas at around 8pm and went straight to our hotel, the OYO Las Vegas. Lee has always been a big fan of Hooters, he tells me its because their wings are so good. The OYO used to be the Hooters hotel and whilst it was sold to OYO, it still has the biggest Hooters in Las Vegas and a lot of the original Hooters themes and signs are yet to be changed over. It felt like the perfect hotel to start off the big 5  0 trip. 

The hotel surprised us. It wasn't one of the big fancy hotels you get on the main parts of the strip but it had a casino, a couple of bars and restaurants, large clean rooms, free breakfast, and an amazing view of the strip. Compared to the cost of the hotels on the strip, it was really good value for money and a hotel we could stop off again in if we were ever doing 1 night in Vegas again, I wouldn't recommend it for a long stay.  

For dinner, we had wings in Hooters and then stayed awake until the early hours of the morning by fighting the jet lag off with some gambling. We didn't win but we had fun throwing money into the slot machines hoping we might win the big jackpot. 

The next day, we enjoyed the free breakfast in Hooters and then headed back to the airport to catch our Hawaii Airlines flight to Oahu.

    Ahh welcome back bloggers - see you haven't lost any of your skills, great video and entry with the editing and music top notch!! I can't believe the flight was business, when I saw the FB post, I'd assumed you'd gone 1st class - it looked great though and must have been nice to lay out flat. I saw the laptop out on the flight, I hope that wasn't Lee working!!
    A nice enough hotel for a overnight stay and a great view of the strip, it takes me back to my trip to Vegas.
    We didn't get to see that much of hooters though, sure there would have been plenty to see :-)
    Watching this made me think - Mum would have loved to have seen this

We left Volcano National Park and headed west towards the Kona side of the island. On our way we stopped off at Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, which was beautiful. We enjoyed splashing around in the warm clear water looking at endangered Hawksbill turtles who were happy to swim around your feet while we tried to keep a safe distance from them.  A little further down the road, we took a turning on the recommendation of one of our friends on Facebook to Ka Lae, the southernmost point in both the Hawaiian Islands and the United States. From here we had planned to hike to Papakōlea beach, also known as Green Sand Beach. A bit of googling on route showed that it was going to be a 2-3 hour hike from the parking lot to get to the beach and we had arrived at the hottest part of the day. Comet Neowise

I try not to get Sam too involved in my obsession with astronomy, but tonight I was staying up until 2.30am and Sam, busy binge-watching Warrior Nun, inadvertently came along for the ride. Recent predictions of naked-eye comets - i.e. those you can see without even binoculars - had left backyard astronomers frustrated, as time after time they failed to deliver. It had been over 20 years since I last saw a naked-eye comet (Hale-Bopp in 1997), so I was naturally cautious about optimistic reports of C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) - or Comet Neowise . After a miserable run of weather, tonight was forecast to be clear. So, after a hard day measuring and cutting up sheets of polycarbonate roofing, I cracked open several beers and waited for the early hours. New Kitchen!

One good thing to come out of 2020 is that a combination of being at home more and not spending all our money on travelling, led to us finally, after 9 years, replace our kitchen! Our junk room  dining room is no more. We finally have a livable space in the kitchen with enough work surface and modern gadgets to accommodate a small restaurant.  TwoGuys looked after us from the outset when we met Heather who designed the space, Mags and Tony who coordinated the different trades and materials. And finally Bruce, the kitchen fitter who was.... well..... a little like Lee. For those who know Lee, know exactly what I meaningtons.  Shout out Jack the sparky, Brendan and Dave the plumbers and Nada our painter who were all amazing.  Here is the video of our journey to the new kitchen:
