Loo Paper
If there is one lesson the recent Covid-19 situation has taught me, it is that people really care about toilet paper.
Never would I have predicted that in a world-wide crisis, the first thing all human beings would think is "do I have enough toilet roll to see me through the next 4 years?". If anything, it actually makes me feel a little more positive that should we ever be in that end-of-the-world situation, we will all have nice clean bums.
Another positive to come out of the toilet roll saga is that the local drug dealers have found a new venture. Toilet rolls, even those a little worn and used around the edges, is raking in more money right now that any illegal drugs. And assuming social distancing rules are maintained, there is no worry of getting in trouble with the law..... unless the rolls are stolen, which I expect most of them are, given you can't buy them in the stops!
Going back to the purpose of this post.....
Lee and I were completely unaffected by the lack of toilet rolls across the world as we had already - several months before - stocked up from Who Gives a Crap toilet roll, kitchen towel and tissue boxes.
I was shocked when I found out how toilet paper in our shops is made. Is it a hugely wasteful process with very little recycling, a lot of chemicals and a huge amount of energy. What I found more disturbing was how many old and established forests were being cut down to supply toilet paper. In fact, the industry was getting gradually worse at using recycled wood rather than better!
I came across Who Gives a Crap looking for an alternative and what I found was a company who not only supplies 100% forest-friendly bamboo toilet paper with no nasty chemicals but who also give 50% of their profits to non-profit organisations. These organisations are working to improve access to hygiene, water and basic sanitation in developing countries.
We now go to the toilet knowing that with each poo, we are helping people around the world fight diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.
The toilet paper is very good too.
Funnily enough I was looking at Who Gives a Crap the other day and thinking about switching over to them, I like that you can set a regular order (at least for the TP) and knowing that it is sound from an environmental and 'paying forward' perspective, does make it a winner.
ReplyDeleteWe'll be moving across to it at some point in the near future and using your voucher :-)
Mitz doesn't look totally convinced by the box, almost as if she is saying why did you put me here ;-)
Thanks for your comment Andrew. Did you make the switch?
DeleteMitzy loves any type of box, she just doesn't show it on. She has a resting grumpy face like her mummy! ;o)
